Vegetarian Tuesdays at St Jude's Cellars

16 Feb 2012 05:39 PM

It was a trial, a bit of fun, then - Bam! - St Jude's Tuesday vegetarian degustation dinners took off. In the spectrum of vegetarian dining, the Vegie Bar is at the cheap and cheerful end; Jacques Reymond's vegetarian degustation is the pinnacle. St Jude's offers ''something in between'' - beautiful seasonal-driven dishes with great wine to match, casual but correct service and a spunky room. Diners can choose from three to five courses - perhaps chilled asparagus soup with sheep's yoghurt and almond milk or a raw garden vegetable crumble with toasted seeds and cauliflower cream. For carnivores, the menu is flipped: meat can be ordered, but as a side, such as Berkshire pork leg, rabbit, market fish or sirloin steak.

St Jude's Cellars, 389 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, 9419 7411. Every Tuesday, two sittings 6.30pm and 8.30pm; bookings essential. Three, four or five courses $35/$42/$50. For a more casual setting, also try Meat Free Mondays at Pearl Oyster, 114 Miller Street, Preston, 9480 2500.
